Peugeot 2008: Wiser than its look

The look of the 2008 has changed dramatically. On the road, the small second-generation Lion SUV has also been transformed!

The 2008 is the latest addition to the PSA group’s CMP platform (Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa …). Like the new 208, stylistically, it has changed from lion cub to lion! Like it or not, its design is more assertive than ever. Note, however, that this look varies somewhat depending on the level of finish chosen, entry-level finishes for example are not entitled to LED daytime running lights in the shape of Lion’s fangs.

Better livability, but …

Still, on the look side, some observers have said that this new 2008 could come to work on the borders of the 3008. On our side, we tend to say that it is approaching it in terms of habitability. Peugeot has in fact retained the largest possible wheelbase on the CMP, ie 2.6 meters, which frees up a lot of space for the rear passengers without using a sliding bench like some Best Used car dealers competitors. The trunk also gains 24 litres, to bring the volume to 434 litres.

On the other hand, we must admit that the two front passengers will be a little tight if they both want to put their arms on the central elbow support. Worse still if you opt for a model with a manual gearbox: it is, in our opinion, far too far behind. This choice gives off very practical storage spaces in front of the box control – including a very well thought-out smartphone holder, bravo! – but the small formats will be badly enough installed to change the ratios. The solution ? Opt for the automatic gearbox! That’s good, our test unit 1.2 PureTech 130 hp was equipped with it.

A Sober Lion

During the first few meters driven at the wheel of the new 2008, two perceptions are directly raised to the surface. First, the i-Cockpit 3D, a Peugeot innovation, requires some adaptation time to get out of the “it stings my eyes and it will make me sick” effect. Not sure, moreover, that this innovation really brings a plus. Second, Peugeot steering has rarely been so light. Let us dwell on this second point for a moment because it clearly demonstrates the change in philosophy at Peugeot.

In a nutshell, the new chassis allows you to go through curves quite quickly but it is less fun than before. As much as the first 2008 was one of the 3 most exciting SUVs in this category to drive, the new one has become very much quieter. Will this Peugeot bet appeal to the brand’s customers? According to an official, buyers are looking for more comfort. Certainly, but be careful not to nibble on market share in… Citroën and, to a lesser extent, DS, which is firmly committed to comfort. The steering calibration seemed better to use with the 1.5 diesel unit but there, the weight of 2008 makes it a little less lively. However, on the whole, we found it more homogeneous, in particular, because we perceive fewer vibrations coming from the engine.

Electric Surprise

In fact, the nice surprise comes above all from the 100% electric version e-2008, not too heavy (1.598 kg), with a lowered center of gravity, and which offers just as much space as the thermal versions. But then you will have to be content with a range of 320 km (WLTP) and pay a minimum of € 37,900.
